Do The Things That You Will Actually Do

Do The Things That You Will Actually Do

One of my mottos is simple,

“Do the things that you will actually do.”

When I was younger, I would dream about doing an hour of seated meditation on a cushion each day. The reality was, I was just never, ever going to do that, not even for one day. After much experimentation, trying to figure out what I would sustainably do when it comes to meditation, I discovered what actually works for me. I will, in fact, lie on my couch, the chaise lounge section, with my weighted blanket (20 lbs) on top of me, my eyes closed, listening to a guided meditation from Insight Timer (a great app for meditation), or from YouTube, or one of the many mentors I follow. The point is, it is easy and, yes, I will do it, almost daily.

A younger me might have also thought I needed to go to the gym five days a week and work up a sweat, doing an intense class like HIIT (high intensity interval training) or CrossFit. This was a constant recipe for failure and feeling bad about myself. It just was not sustainable for me. I was not going to do that long term. A wiser, more mature me says, let’s just do a couple classes at the gym each week that I enjoy and then walk outside on the other days. This I will do. It is simple. Simple is best for me.

You will learn so many different practices from so many different people, if you are into self-development, which I am guessing you are, since you are reading this. Through much trial and error, I have learned that things don’t have to be done exactly as they’re taught to you. You can take what you like and leave the rest, and then you cater what you like, to fit your needs. I joke with my husband that I do things Jessie’s Way. I have Jessified other people’s ideas. I hope you will you-ify all the practices that you put into place. Make it yours.

Do the things you will really do. We are aiming for sustainable changes not temporary solutions.

What are some things that you have made truly yours? What are the things that you will actually do? Share in the comments. We love getting new ideas.
